From Dr. Susan Pollard
Dear Friends and Family,
Over the last 3 weeks I have been working with an up and coming
organization called Acupuncturists Without Borders. It has been a dream
of Diana Fried, an acupuncturist in New Mexico, to create an
organization of acupuncturists that can go to areas of disaster, much
like the Red Cross does, to provide acupuncture treatments that have
been proven to give great benefit in cases of acute stress or Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder. Many people were treated in NYC using this
protocol following 9/11, although it was not under the organized
umbrella of Acupuncturists Without Borders since the organization was
not created then.
Diana felt compelled to make her dream a reality
after the onslaught of hurricane Katrina in the gulf coast. She, and a
group of other dedicated people, have been working tirelessly to create
a legal not-for-profit organization. It is done, or very close to being
complete.
My contribution has been in speaking with and
organizing acupuncturists around the country who have offered their
services. I am one of those people who has volunteered my time.
Therefore, I plan to close my office for a week so I can go help any
way I can.
I just found out this morning, after many fits and
starts trying to organize logistics, that we have been given the
go-ahead to travel to Lafayette, LA to begin treatments. Consequently,
I will likely be traveling there the week of October 9 to lend my
professional services to the many evacuees, rescue workers, fire and
police workers, Red Cross volunteers and the countless others who have
experienced the trauma of the hurricanes, or who have worked long hours
to help and support the victims. I will likely be working 10 or more
hours a day treating at least 10 people an hour. For more information
about the organization and the benefits of the treatment you can visit
www.acuwithoutborders.com.
I am also writing not only to inform you of my
recent activities, but also to ask if you can support our efforts
financially. Specifically, I am asking for help in deferring my travel
expenses. Airfare looks to be about $500. I can drive there in 15 hours
and spend approximately $200 in gas for the round trip. I'd rather save
the money and drive. There will also be inoculations, lodging and food
for the week. Any donations I receive that surpass my immediate
expenses will be forwarded to Acupuncturists Without Borders to further
their cause. If you can contribute any amount you can make checks
payable to Dr. Susan Pollard and make a note in the memo section that
says AWB Donation, and mail them to my home address: XXX, NM .
All the best,
Sue |
